BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS AND PBIS
At Bayou Vista Elementary, we strive to create an atmosphere of accountability and respect. We foster an environment that is conducive to learning and sharing. To do this, students must work at treating all people with respect and take responsibility for personal behavior. Teachers will be firm, but fair with all students. This PBIS plan will be followed with fidelity. We also expect parental support in helping maintain appropriate conduct in school.
DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN MAJOR AND MINOR INFRACTIONS
The degree of misbehavior determines whether an infraction should be considered major or minor.
Minor Infractions: Behaviors that temporarily interrupt daily procedures, instruction, or activities in the classroom or during unstructured time. The student responds to the redirection after correction. Examples include, but are not limited to, out-of-seat behavior, off-task behavior, off-task conversation, making noise with materials, and dress code violations (uniform).
Major Infractions: Sustained, repeated interruptions to daily procedures, instruction, or activities in the classroom or during unstructured time. The student does not respond when redirected. Examples include, but are not limited to, arguing, yelling, cursing, and fighting.
RULES These are the rules that your child is asked to follow. As the rules accumulate, minor infractions will be written. After 4 minor infractions, a major referral will be written and submitted to the Dean of Students or Principal.
1. Make smart choices.
2. Follow directions quickly.
3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.
4. Raise your hand for permission to speak.
5. Keep your hands, feet, and all other objects to yourself.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
Grades PK-1: Teachers will only have one set of students to document behaviors on. If a student gets an infraction (breaks a rule), teachers will call home and document in the parent communication log of JCampus. A behavior chart/calendar will be sent home daily. Parents, please review with your child, initial/sign, and return to your child’s teacher the next day.
Grades 2-5: Teachers will have a behavior chart for each group of students that they teach. Teachers will document the any infraction (rule) that may occur during their class only. For example, Little Johnny may get a rule in Mrs. Gunner’s class for constantly talking without permission. This will not affect the behavior report from his next teacher’s class. Little Johnny would get a clean slate in Mr. Savoy's class. Mrs. Gunner is required to call home for any infraction incurred in his/her classroom and not Mr. Savoy.
STEPS TAKEN As students fail to follow the rules, the following process will be followed.
From Minor Infraction to Major Referral 1. A warning is given. 2. Student goes to “Time to Think” (reflection time in a neutral zone classroom). 1st Minor is written. Teacher conference with student. Teacher makes phone call home and documents in Jcampus. 3. 2nd Minor; Teacher conferences with student. Teacher calls home; Document in Jcampus. 4. 3rd Minor; Teacher calls home; Document in Jcampus; Dean conferences with student; classroom intervention put in place. 5. 4th Minor; A major referral is written. Teacher submits to Dean of Students. Dean contacts parent to discuss further action that will be taken. Please try to resolve issues with the classroom teacher first. If that does not work, you can contact the Dean of Students. If that does not work, you will contact the Principal for a resolution.
INTERVENTIONS AND CONSEQUENCES This is the coding that teachers will follow. Infractions are rules that are broken.
Kindergarten: 5 Infractions/Rules Daily = 1 Minor Infraction
Grades 1-5: 4 Minor Infractions = 1 Major Referral
**Check your child’s folder daily for evidence of behaviors during the day. All St. Mary Parish Schools will follow the same code of conduct. Please refer to the Discipline Matrix for consequences issued
